10·3 months agoThat’s hilarious! Reading this I can’t tell if your parents were pulling your leg or horribly racist. Please tell us your parents have a sense of humor.
Buddhists are NOT cannibals.

2·4 months agoThe Muppets Christmas Carol is downright perfect. Merry Christmas!
This is almost a bucket sort, which is practically O(n).
(I’ll leave it to the other readers to state the trade-offs)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do languages that use non-Latin alphabets (Asian, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew) have upper and lower case letters? What about serif or sans-serif? How do they show emphasis?English
291·6 months agoJapanese has three alphabets (and the English alphabet… and those Arabic numbers we are all familiar with)
- Hiragana (ひらがな) for native words, grammar, and morphology - it reminds me of cursive
- Katakana (カタカナ) it gives an unmistakable clue you are reading a foreign word - but can also be used for emphasis
- Kanji (漢字) borrows Chinese characters that can be read with native or borrowed sounds, but generally with the same meaning
Given those and the English letters at your fingertips they have a lot of tools to give context. Grab a newspaper or Manga sometime, even if you don’t know the words you can tell each writing system apart pretty easily.

Yep. Balance. More generally it’s all about social calibration. Get a good idea of where you are, then aim for the comfortable middle.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How did you find leverage to tilt a situation or dynamic in your favor when it would have otherwise seemed hopeless?English
8·1 year agoThis is a very generic question but I think I know where you’re coming from.
A lot of people react to things rather than consider what effect they want. Look at what you’re doing, and ask yourself if you think this will get you the change or response you want.
i.e. Sometimes yelling, or flipping someone off at road rage can feel good, but it doesn’t get that driver to reconsider their poor driving. Give them a shameful finger wag and you’ve got them thinking…
Pause and reflect on what you expect your behavior to accomplish.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why did communism always turn into a kind of dictatorship?English
164·1 year agoSo you’re saying you agree?
Walmart is absolutely a result of capitalism, those intricate supply chains are in place to make money. Maybe we could do it without a common way to track needs for a while, but would it adapt? Would the alternative resist corruption better? The invention of Money almost seems an inevitable consequence from one perspective.
I don’t think this answers the original question, but it’s an interesting side topic.
