Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How to avoid an immigration/emmigration black list
41·3 months agoYou can pay out of pocket for blood tests. Don’t give them your doctor information, just give them an alias etc.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are there many complains about AI power usage but almost none about the resources being wasted by the war/arms industry?

46·3 months agoI would argue the war industry probably has less regulations than other businesses.
Got proof? Because I’m pretty sure military contractors have to explain themselves to senators and congresspeople that got them the contract if toxic waste leaks out of a “secure” facility.
Datacenters on the other hand are corporations using their own money/investments to grab land, congress/senators didn’t ask them to.
Out of a bad situation you got probably the best outcome. Sorry.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is Lemmy inherently more “social” and Mastodon more “individual” media?
5·3 months agoYou can use both for both lol.
Plenty of lemmy is people just yelling their takes, or pushing the links they want you to see.
Plenty of Mastodon is people filtering by the hashtags they care about and having long form conversations within those topics.
They both take a fire hose of federated data and sort it out for you in a similar fashion. One is just more horizontal and one is more vertical.

86·3 months agoBombs are carefully manufactured with waste products controlled, and products blowing up today’s enemies coming to kill your kids. The demands placed on a local population are moderate and can be adjusted to.
AI center sucks up water and electricity (making it expensive to local neighborhood), pollutes area surrounding it, very quick to setup so neighborhoods have no time to adjust, and product is only marketable to people who are tired of using their brain. To a local neighborhood, it’s a lot closer to “wtf are we getting out of this?”

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Are there any VPNs that support dedicated IPv6 addresses?
1·5 months agoPer reddit u/pathtracing - Thu Jun 19 08:27:23 2025 UTC - https://old.reddit.com/r/ipv6/comments/1lf5dmi/question_about_vpn_with_ipv6/
I think the problem is you (and others) using the term “vpn” to cover various different needs.
There’s:
- actual privacy from network observers, which is about only Mullvad
- exploiting non-technical podcast listeners, which is just about every other product labelled “vpn”
- providing better connectivity, which is Tunnelbroker or a GRE/vxlan provider
- joining the DFZ via a crap isp, which is bgptunnel and various more expensive ones
You want 3 or 4, which is fine. Making item 1 provide a subnet doesn’t help 1 do its job any better and definitely will harm unskilled users.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it true that letting your phone charge to 100% is bad?
4·6 months agoYes.
Simplified and probably inaccurate explanation: 100% & 0% wears at the "membrane’ that keeps the two energy compounds apart. Charges afterwards don’t reach 100% as easily, or not at all. Charging to 80% puts less strain on the membrane as it keeps the two energy rich compounds apart. 50% is best, especially if device is always plugged in. At 50% the membrane is under the least amount of stress.
*Molten batteries *are the only ones I know that solve the problem, but they’re the size of a house and meant to power cities.
Also we’re finally starting to see devices acknowledge this issue. Phones now only charge to 80% overnight then go to 100% shortly before your alarm goes off. And always plugged in laptops can be set to 60% charge to preserve the lifespan of the battery.

24·7 months agoJust need to start a rumor that this will allow the government to identify GUN OWNERS, for some future gun CONFISCATION effort. Cart_catalog
I look forward to a large contingent of MAGA voters suddenly insisting that they are now, among other things, experts on statistical methodology and census operations. You know, topics that they knew nothing about last week. Or this week. Rirere
