  • I ate in a certain teacher’s room during lunch in middle school. I was well liked by teachers because I enjoyed school and behaved well. My best friend was a trouble maker because of unmedicated ADHD.

One day he comes to the classroom during lunch to see me, and the teacher goes “Oh hell no” and drags him out of the room. Confused, I go out into the hallway and see him dragging my friend down the hallway by the ear, screaming “You’re useless, and you’ll never amount to anything! Everyone knows you are garbage! Just give up!”

It felt weird because they were so nice to me, and the unmitigated aggression seemed to come out of nowhere. I didn’t understand for years that some people are just broken inside. I did stop eating there.

Anyway my friend is a successful chemical engineer now.

  • One time I went on a date with a girl I met online, and she didn’t look at me. She had a big smile the whole time, and would briefly raise her head just to lower it immediately. Shortly into our long dinner I realized she was blind.

I thought it was odd she hadn’t mentioned it, but rolled with it and we had a nice dinner. Two hours later she left the restaurant and drove off.

I sat there for a while doing a post-mortem on our dinner thinking about how it went. Then it hit me: She drove here?

Girl was so shy that I actually thought she was blind.

  • My current company contracts someone to keep a few fridges and shelves in the break room stocked with higher grade convenience-store style food. The prices are pretty cheap, so I suspect they actually lose money on the deal. If I grabbed some food and just walked away with it, that would technically be stealing. I doubt they would confront me about something that small, though. Ford is obviously wrong to fire someone over a cookie.

It always seemed like a no-brainer to me to provide subsidized food for expensive salary workers who may be willing to work unpaid overtime if they don’t have to leave to get dinner, at least from a logic self-serving point of view.

  • My mom kept the fridge stocked with sodas when I was a kid, mostly because I had friends over often and she wanted them to feel welcome. I usually drank soda because it was convenient; quick, cold, no dishes. Over years I downed thousands of sodas. It didn’t even occur to me that I didn’t even like it that much.

Now I drink so much water. I’ll have a soda a few times a year, but if I’m thirsty water is king. I feel like a kid who got caught smoking forced to smoke a whole pack.

  • The reason I stopped going there was their terrible app shunting my order to a location 10 miles away from the one I was standing in, the new one which I had never eaten at, then telling me in the help documentation that they offer the helpful solution of allowing me to fix it myself by putting in a whole new order at full cost. They didn’t even start making the food until I said I was there, so there’s no reason they couldn’t transfer or cancel the order. The audacity to pitch “just give us even more money” as a solution was more than I was willing to accept for all time. I drove my ass the ten miles while fuming, and never went back.

Also they cancelled the snack wrap.

Every time I’ve seen them in the news in the last ten years has just made me more secure in my decision to boycott. It’s like they find the food purchasing customers inconvenient to their real estate business.
