I had $0.14 in my checking and $0.07 in my savings and my mortgage was three months behind and I didn’t have a job and I didn’t have anybody I could turn to for money. I realized how much I had and how I wasted it all. And knowing that climb to get back was going to be hard.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When was the last time someone stunned you with a statement?
14·8 days agoI had a small plumbing leak that cost me $700 to fix. There was some water damage but insurance will cover it.
The cost to remove the water - $10k The cost to rebuild after the water leak - $60k
The way our floor was laid makes it impossible to fix just the affected area. They need to tear up the entire kitchen, living room, and hallways.
Six weeks of construction and while they are tearing up the kitchen we have no fridge.

55·8 days agoMy boss, her boss, her boss’s boss, the big boss (who reports to the CEO) and I are on a meeting last week.
At the beginning of the meeting there were some pleasantries being shared. The big boss shared her kid was going to be featured in some large chess tournament
My boss replies “that’s great. What kind of chess does he play?”
I was shocked because there is only one type of chess just like there is only one type of checkers. Yes I know there is 4-d chess, Star Trek chess, and chess game variants. But typically there is only one type of chess.
The big boss answers “You know chess. He is a grand master.”
My boss replies “Grand master. Does that mean he is a performing magician?”
I sat there looking at my screen in shock. My boss had not idea what grand masters are.
The big boss had to explain the chess grand masters to her.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many Lemmy users post regularly (let's say daily)?
4·9 days agoI post sometimes especially when I’m using cannabis. This is more relaxed than Reddit where they will tar and feather you if you don’t follow their rules.
When someone completely misses the point or context of the situation or scenario.
Me too. I went to the ENT last week and they said I should look at hearing aids.
I bought a pair of EarPods pro and they have a hearing aid feature. I wear those when I need to hear better.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you encountered anyone who uses ai, but claims not to?
4·10 days agoWe have this guy at work whose only job is to make everything more AI-friendly.
He has claimed AI makes work easier. He demonstrated how he could make a PowerPoint in 5 minutes while it may take a human a day.
He’s annoying and nobody likes him.
I used to be an insurance adjuster for a car insurance company. Worst job in the world. I would meet the insured and they are going through a terrible time. Then I would meet with the auto shop and they want to make as much money as possible. Then I would need to negotiate to get a reasonable number. Then I find out instead of repairing the dents and dings they just put Bondo on the whole thing. So the insured gets a piece of crap vehicle back and the auto shop and insurance company makes an incredible amount of money.
I quit after three weeks.
My kids call me old fashion because I listen to 90s - mid 2000s music exclusively.
My kids listen to newer music (I don’t know the bands) but I show them the impact of 90s and 2000s music had on the industry.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats a good lesson you learned on the job?
53·19 days agoNo matter what, under no circumstances should you ever believe the company or place you work for will back you up.
If a company was placed in a situation where they can get rid of you for any reason, they will and they will do it as fast as possible.
Even if you believe you are irreplaceable, a company will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get you out of the equation.
Even if you have been with the company for 20+ years, if the company sees a way to save a hundred bucks by getting rid of you, they will.
Even if you and your boss and their bosses are buddy buddy and they are the godparent to your child and if you donated them a kidney, they will replace you.
Even if you show that you work the most, bring in the most sales, work the longest, get paid the least, and do work so everyone can slack off, they will replace you.
Also HR is never there for you. It is there to protect the company first and foremost. If you go to them for any reason, you are on a list to be the first to go.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you need an LinkedIn to get a job in 2026?
18·26 days agoA few years ago LinkedIn was a must have. Recruiters and sourcers would scour LinkedIn for their candidates.
Now it is just trash. Ghost and fake job opportunities, AI slop, and bots have turned LinkedIn to a cesspool.
I work with companies who pull LinkedIn data for B2B leads and 99% of them stopped because it is ineffective and a waste of time.
If you have a profile that’s great. If you don’t have one, there is no need to make one unless someone specifically tells you they need it.
You are fine.
I commonly get called names and have disparaging comments fly my way.
At first, I let them get under my skin. I would get depressed. But I realized this is exactly what they want me to feel. They won.
Now when someone “makes a joke” I just tell myself they won’t win and realize whatever credibility or trust I had for this person is lost. They are wholly uneducated and I make the choice not to engage with them any further.
I win this round. Not them
So many gaming ones.
When mortal kombat was released for consoles, the kids passed the “blood code” for the genesis
When mortal kombat 2 came out, their were so many myths about super fatalities and weird stuff about how street fighter was in it.

I know they are paywalled but they give so much information.
I had a contractor that took my money and ran. I used one of those reverse lookup sites with just his name and phone number and I got his address as well as his relatives.
He did not like the fact I had a deputy serve him his court appearance or the time when I called his mother to confirm his data before the court date.
Long story short, I won the case. He claimed no assets so I will never get paid back.
