  • My cousin’s dad was recently T-boned in an intersection, he was ok but his car was totaled. Before paying him out the insurance company bought the high res footage of his car in a grocery store parking lot just minutes before the collision. The company sent him an itemized list with zoomed in shots of every scratch, dent, windshield crack etc and knocked off $5,000+ from his payout. That’s why it’s called surveillance capitalism 🤑

I think as stories like these become more common, you’ll see more people willing to vote out politicians who refused to outlaw these. Just imagine if these things were allowed to be used for traffic tickets, they wouldn’t last one election cycle!

  • My parents were very anti-sugar/processed foods and extremely controlling of our diet, there was a lock on the pantry door and everything (which is how I learned to pick locks 😉). All of us went wild in adulthood. All of us are obese except my sister who runs a half marathon per day. The funny thing is my parents never ate healthy, they would devour desserts at work and hide candy in their bedroom closet. My dad still drinks a gallon of chocolate milk per week

  • I largely agree with your points. My city government saw this and tried to break off just a single responsibility away from cops (transporting homeless people to a shelter) and give it to specially trained social workers. But the police union immediately began crying because they thought it could potentially lead to reduced police budgets in the future and they got the Republican state legislature to pass laws protecting the full scope of police responsibility.

Also in my personal experience with cops I know IRL, they love using their guns and look for every opportunity to use one. Shooting innocent dogs is a perk to them.

  • Since 1977 the US federal government has had to require many grocery stores to sell produce. The margins are lower, the labor is higher, and they use a lot of grocery floor space. Without that intervention there probably wouldn’t be access to any produce at all for most Americans. Capitalism is very much the center of this story. In Europe the varieties of produce being grown are being mainly dictated by flavor and taste, in the USA resistance to insects, cheaper to harvest, size of product are the main criteria when the varieties of seeds to plant are being selected.

  • That’s wonderful you are a data engineer, but in a normal business setting most people are not. I’m the only one at my company who knows SQL exists. But everyone knows what Excel is, everyone knows at least the basics of using it. Even if I got my coworkers familiar with and writing SQL (which is a laughable thought) there are still clients.

Data is everywhere, and Excel has been the default program for light data analysis for decades. I hate it as much as the next person, but right now it’s inescapable and irreplaceable.

Excel/Access is literally the only reason I ever boot to Windows anymore.

I do! My religious mother said it was certain because her church Facebook group said there was an upcoming blood moon and quoted some ambiguous bible verses. She wanted me to go buy a dozen cheap tents at K-mart’s store closing sale. I refused and she bore witness to me that it was the end of days.

I reminded her about the “prophesies” she spouted to me on inauguration day and she rolled her eyes and asked why I was holding onto the past.

  • When I last visited Argentina Uber was using the official exchange rates which were just fantasy numbers. As soon as you match with a driver they’d message you and you’d negotiate the cash price. Then the ride in the app would be cancelled.

Uber didn’t mind because they were still getting the ~$1 or so cancel fee for basically being a messaging app.
